Oh, where are the statesmen like those of old?
Like Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington?
The statesmen and leaders, honest and bold,
Who fought against tyranny -- fought it and won!
Who forged a great nation, second to none!
Where are the statesmen? Do any
remain?
Or, are politicians all we have spun?
Politicians---politics---will they reign?
Do any value our needs more than gold?
Will any finish what they have begun?
Will any try to maintain and uphold
The promises made in their campaign run?
Or will they compound our troubles a ton,
And lead without heart or soul or brain
As foes of wisdom, their work left undone?
Politicians---politics---will they rein?
Why are our leaders so frigidly cold?
Why have they all turned away from the sun?
Is it America's future they've sold?
Daily, they fool us and trick us, they stun
Us with lies and deceit; their honor, they shun!
Corruption and greed and drugs, like cocaine,
And lies, and sex, they pursue these for fun;
Politicians---politics---will they rain?
Must all of our leaders rule like a Hun?
Must all of them try to be Reason's bane?
Reign, rein and rain---I intended the pun---
Politicians---politics---will they reign?
