On a hot June day, with snow on the ground,
In an overcrowded, deserted town,
I walked the town square, which was strangely round,
‘Til I spied a staircase ascending down.
I followed the stair to a basement attic,
Where a giant dwarf, with a smiling frown,
Was talking with a peaceful fanatic,
‘Til joined by a serious clown.
The naked clown wore a business suit,
With its empty pockets full of loot;
He was followed by a barking cat,
And a bare-headed man, who wore a hat.
The cat had silver hair of gold,
And was really a kitten, though quite old;
The man with the hat had hair that was red,
Which sat rather nicely on his shiny bald head.
The mute fanatic was yelling a lot,
And sweating profusely because of the cold;
The giant dwarf was freezing hot,
So he bought a new coat which was really quite old.
The man with the hat combed out his bald hair,
And sat on a stool while standing to eat;
He closed the lone window to get some fresh air,
And put his new mittens back on his feet.
I stood there gaping, unamazed,
Astonished, astounded, hardly fazed,
While, outside the window, but inside the room,
Marched a funeral procession, with both bride and groom.
I watched these strange things with both my eyes closed,
And woke with a start, to find I had dozed.
My blanket had somehow got under my sheet,
And I found that my pillow was under my feet!
As my mother was calling the family to sup,
I rolled out of bed and fell straight up!
