When I took my first college class in Creative Writing, I had to purchase Flash Fiction. This book contained short stories two pages or less in length. Next came Micro Fiction, with stories less than one page long. Later, I found another book containing fifty-fives. Fifty-fives are 55 words or less in length, with the title being seven words or less. Perhaps this trend towards writing shorter than short stories has been caused by the ever-increasing pace of technological development. Maybe the increasingly hectic pace of daily life has led writers to cram their writing into whatever tiny bits of time are left available to them, and perhaps these shorter fiction forms are the result. I don't know for sure, but I do know that fifty-fives are fun to write and extremely challenging. If you don't believe me, try writing any type of short story or scene, and then see if you can edit it down to fifty-five words or less. I hope you enjoy these.Wilk Van Buren |
